A wood burned sampler as suggested by Poole to serve as a visual guide to shading and texturing ideas.

This is a very worthwhile project to undertake. Simply mark a grid on your board and create as many textures as you can with each tip--one per square. The possibilities are endless and having a reference on hand is quite valuable when working on a piece.
