Unfortunately, I have not found an abundance of period examples of pyrography. My research continues.
Five sides of a wooden box were designed and decorated in the technique of pyrography for entry into the East Kingdom's Second Annual King and Queen's A&S Challenge. The box is known as Apollonia's Fox Box as each scene featured foxes.

Either of these modern books are helpful in exploring shading and texturing techniques. I highly recommend the creation of sampler as described by the artist. Having just completed an expanded sampler, I can tell you that the visual record of the variety of textures is very helpful.
There is no need to borrow or purchase a copy of both of Poole's books. They are all but identical to my eye in content.
